About

Welcome to the Mind:Scape project, where the boundaries between the past, present, and future blur as we explore the transformative potential of extended reality (XR) technologies. At Mind:Scape we believe in the power of retrospection in shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Mission

Mind:Scape is driven by a singular mission: to uncover the profound effects of XR technology on people's perceptions, emotions, and behaviours. As a research project, we are committed to delving deep into the implications of this innovative technology, understanding how it shapes our memories, narratives, and sense of self.

Vision

We hope to transform the way people connect with their memories and personal histories through the power of extended reality (XR) technologies. We aim to create a world where geographical and temporal distances no longer hinder individuals from revisiting and engaging with their past experiences in profound and meaningful ways.

Our
Story

Initial Ambition and Shift in Focus

Mind:Scape was initially designed as a tool to enhance mental health treatments by incorporating immersive VR and AR environments into therapeutic practices. Soret et al. (2021) found that XR's ability to create realistic, immersive experiences significantly improved treatment engagement and emotional involvement. However, as we explored the technology's potential further, there was a significant shift. We started to investigate how XR could transform the way we revisit and experience memories. This change was prompted by the understanding that 3D scans could elicit strong emotional and behavioral reactions in a safe and controlled environment, a notion supported by Carlson (2023).

Exploration of Memory

Our improved understanding inspired us to shift focus to memory exploration. This new direction was supported by research from Li et al. (2021), which emphasized the crucial role of emotional engagement in simulations mirroring real-life experiences. These insights guided us to use XR not only for therapeutic interventions but also as a means to forge a deep emotional connection with personal histories.

02

Technological impact and Ethical Considerations

We utilize Luma AI, an incredibly advanced and relatively new technology, to improve our 3D scanning and rendering capabilities. This technology enables us to capture detailed and emotionally impactful environments with superior quality. It's crucial to provide users with authentic experiences of their past. In addition to these technological advancements, we continue to address ethical considerations in using XR in mental health, including minimizing cybersickness risks and ensuring privacy, as highlighted by Reger et al. (2019).

Looking forward

As we further explore and develop the capabilities of Mind:Scape, our main goal is to uncover the profound effects of extended reality (XR) on mental health and personal introspection. We are dedicated to pushing the limits of what XR can accomplish, examining how these technologies can revolutionize therapeutic practices and personal experiences.
